Apartment Therapy's Best of 2015

I am super excited to announce that a space I designed for a small condo in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC was included in Apartment Therapy's Best of 2015 "Standout Small Cool Homes"!  The homeowner, Chloe, purchased the apartment 3 years ago and brought me in to help her turn what was a dark, moody lair into a bright space reflective of her personality and lifestyle.  You can read the post here.

Bedrooms for a Rainy Day

It’s raining here in DC today and I don’t particularly feel like doing anything that involves getting out of bed so today’s post will be dedicated to bedrooms.  Like the bathroom, I feel like the bedroom should be a calming oasis.  A place that welcomes you with open arms and reassures you that everything will be okay after a good night’s sleep.  A few requirements for my perfect bedroom are good pillows, white sheets, a duvet, a soft rug and lots of natural light for the sunny day and accent lighting for the rainy ones.  I love bedrooms that are simple and crisp but I also like those that are moody and dark.  A few common misconceptions about bedroom design are that all your casework (nightstands, dressers) and table lamps have to match or that all your finishes have to be the same. And while you should try to maintain some consistency to tie the room together, it is not necessary that everything come from the same store or have the same look. Take a peek at my picks and comment which bedrooms you like the best and why.

Love the live edge headboard and the black grasscloth wallpaper on this Atlanta

Another view from the Kleinhelter project. The pop of turquoise on those chairs is so                                                                                 unexpected! I live for it!

The mix of neutrals in this bedroom designed by Wendy Labrum Interiors is soothing and                                                 inviting. The bed looks like a perfect place to take a nap!

The cool seafoam green of the natural fiber wallpaper in this bedroom is definitely a call to                                                   relaxation.  Designed by House of Jade Interiors.

A Modern Take On Four Poster Beds

I have never been much of a fan of four poster beds.  Growing up we had one and if I wasn’t getting in trouble for trying to climb it then I was annoyed that one of the posts was obstructing my line of sight.  In my adult life, I’ve always appreciated the drama a four poster brings to a space, especially when it has a lovely canopy, but I’ve never pictured it as something I’d want in my own home.  That is, until, Bernhardt introduced their Kensington Upholstered Poster Bed in a highly polished plated brass at last year’s Spring High Point Market.  Since that time, I’ve been swooning at every advertisement, editorial and designer portfolio that has pictured a brass, chrome or mirrored four poster bed.  In a space where you don’t often see highly polished metals, I love the addition of these sleek and shiny beds to the bedroom.  You totally have my permission to diagnose me with magpie syndrome while you look at my roundup below.
